The Legacy of Inspirational Speaking with Tom Ziglar (#65)

Storytelling with Inspirational Speaker and Keeper of the Ziglar Legacy, Tom Ziglar

Tom Ziglar runs the Ziglar media empire, helping the legacy of his dad Zig Ziglar live on. As CEO of Ziglar and key collaborator on his father’s 30th book, Born to Win, Tom carries on the organization’s “profoundly simple” philosophy: “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.

He also takes the stage, addresses leadership of all levels, co-hosts the podcast, The Ziglar Show, Inspiring Your True Performance, with Kevin Miller (our guest from season 2)… he’s definitely an inspirational storyteller.

“I started doing presentations and speaking … reluctantly. I was the guy who prepared the stage for The World’s Best. I was nervous. The story I told myself was, ‘They want me to be like my dad.’ But no. I realized they just want me to be the best version of myself.” - Tom Ziglar on his storytelling journey

Unplug and rest. You were engineered for success.

Tom talks about how to unplug and rest with a purpose, because we were all created for a purpose. His suggestion to unplug, get away from your phone, social media and TV and spend time with loved ones at least an hour before bed is what he says will unlock those seeds of greatness.

“It may seem like a big deal to get your cell phone in the right mode and to turn off social media … an hour before you go to bed. Until you realize that you were created for a purpose, engineered for success … [and] go to sleep knowing that you’re waking up with a purpose.” - Tom Ziglar on purposeful rest

Storytelling takes work, no matter your level

Tom watched his dad Zig Ziglar prepare for presentations often. Even after thousands of speaking events, Zig would spend hours preparing. Tom had asked him why he prepares like that, even though he knows the stories so well. Zig would tell him that it might be the first time someone is seeing him speak, so he needs to be at his best.

One particular time this happened, Tom saw his dad take out his folder with notes in it on a flight and go over them meticulously. Even after 40 years, he’d take every presentation seriously, always working to improve.

“The reason he did it is PC. Persistent consistency. Consistency means you work on it everyday, or as often as necessary. Persistent means that whenever you work on it, you take it up a notch.” - Tom Ziglar on the secret to success
